Health Action Alert: Call the Governor to Support Tobacco 21
Action Alert: Help Prevent Young People from Using Tobacco
The State Senate and NH House of Representatives passed four bills that will make New Hampshire healthier — prescription drug price relief, telehealth expansion, Tobacco 21, and support for behavioral health services in schools. These bills are steps away from becoming law as they now head to the Governor’s desk.
Action Alert for Tobacco 21
Governor Sununu has not indicated whether he will sign sign HB 1245, which includes Tobacco 21, into law. Please contact Gov. Sununu’s office at 603-271-2121 or at governorsununu@nh.gov and urge him to sign this critical piece of legislation that will raise the tobacco sales age to 21.
New Futures, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization that advocates, educates and collaborates to improve the health and wellness of all New Hampshire residents, is asking those who call in to the Governor’s office to provide feedback on the call. Please consider responding to their survey here.
Why NH needs Tobacco 21
Increasing the tobacco sales age from 19 to 21 will go far to boost substance misuse prevention and support the long-term health and safety of youth of Granite State youth. This bill will not only keep NH kids safe and healthy but will also clear up confusion and help ensure stores are complying with the federal Tobacco 21 law, which is required for NH to receive critical federal Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment block grant funding.
New Hampshire’s rate of tobacco use among youth remains one of the country’s highest and is continuing to rise. According to the 2019 New Hampshire Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 50% of Granite State youth have tried e-cigarettes and nearly 34% report current use.
We must speak up now and urge Governor Sununu to sign this bill for the health of our youth!

Safe Harbor Recovery Center Re-Opens
Safe Harbor Recovery Center Re-Opens
Safe Harbor Recovery Center, Granite Pathways’ peer-led program for those seeking recovery, reopened its doors on June 24 after a three-month lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
It’s the first part of a three-phase reopening, said Program Director Dustin Ward. Visits are by appointment or crisis drop-in only. A maximum of 10 people are allowed in at any one time; all visitors are temperature-checked, given masks and hand sanitizer and queried about possible exposure. They follow a one-way traffic flow from appointments to exit. Only small meetings are currently allowed pending the next phase of reopening.
“Unfortunately, some people lost their jobs or homes, or didn’t qualify for stimulus checks,” Dustin said. “Some don’t have cell phones or computers. Connection is so important to recovery, and while we connected with many individuals via telehealth support, we weren’t able to communicate with everyone.”
As such, reopening has been a relief to staff and program participants alike. Prior to the lockdown over 600 people visited Safe Harbor each month for recovery meetings, wellness activities and more. Safe Harbor is a community, where people find tremendous support and a real sense of belonging.

Free Webinar: Marijuana - Parenting for Prevention 2020
Parents face more challenges than ever in having effective prevention conversations with their teens around marijuana use. Despite the fact that this drug is more potent than ever, perception of harm is at an all-time low due to legalization, medicinal use and methods of ingesting like vaping and edibles which seem so much easier and more palatable. We can’t give up! In this webinar, we will explore the important role parents play, discuss the landscape of cannabis products our kids may be exposed to, and learn how we can reduce the chances of our teens using.

Health Action Alert – Call your NH Senators
Health Action alert - Call your NH Senators
Several critical bills are being voted on by the New Hampshire Senate on Tuesday, June 16. If passed, these bills could have major positive implications for the health and safety of our youth and families, the cost of prescription drugs, and access to quality health care now and in the future. Please take a few minutes to contact your state senator regarding these bills.
Tobacco 21
New Hampshire’s rate of tobacco use among youth remains one of the country’s highest and is continuing to rise. According to the 2019 New Hampshire Youth Risk Behavior Survey, 50% of Granite State youth have tried e-cigarettes and nearly 34% report current use. Tobacco 21 is the evidence-based age proven to support prevention, healthy development, and long-term health and safety.
Action: Call Senators and support Granite State youth!
RX Drug Price Relief
It is more important than ever that Granite Staters can afford and access the medications they rely upon to live. The package of drug price relief bills will help to limit cost increases by allowing New Hampshire to import certain medications from Canada, requiring insurance companies to cover epi-pens, capping the price of insulin, and creating a drug affordability board to develop cost-saving strategies and policies, among other measures.
Action: Call Senators and support RX price relief!
Telehealth
Telehealth, in which a patient has access to a health care provider via telephone or videoconferencing, goes far to increase access to needed health care services for thousands of Granite Staters. It is critical NH expand access to telehealth permanently to help us overcome COVID-19 and support the health and wellness of our state into the future.
Action: Call Senators and support health care access!
Behavioral Health Services in Schools
It is important we ensure NH youth get the social and emotional supports they need. This can be achieved by providing assistance to school districts to implement Multi-Tiered System of Supports for Behavioral Health and Wellness (MTSS-B). It is essential this evidence-based prevention framework is in NH schools to support our youth and help improve school culture. When a child’s social and emotion needs are met we know academic achievement can improve significantly.
Action: Call Senators and support youth behavioral health!

I’m OK, Are You OK?
I'm OK, are you OK?
This forum will be on the topic of Sober Living (Recovery Residences) facilities and homes in NH, and NHCORR’s efforts to accredit these facilities.
It’s hard enough to find safe, supportive sober living when straight out of treatment and early in recovery. Since mid-March many recovery residences have been facing unique challenges. Reoccurrence of residents condition, unemployment, delays in paying rent, and challenges to the culture and balance of recovery residence communities are emerging. Becoming accredited by NHCORR can help with some of these things (i.e. rental assistance), bus as we are finding, the Covid 19 response is still very challenging to our recovery community, and those providing safe places to live.
